8 Tips to Get Ready to
Leave an Abuser

1. Start saving money for your exit day and put it in a safe place where your abuser can't find it. American Express or other bank checks are the safest since no one but you can use them.

2. Open a bank account in your name only. Also get a safety deposit box so that you have somewhere to store copies of important papers. Make sure you hide the key to your safety deposit box.

3. Open a credit card and/or debit card in your name only.

4. Open a post office box in your name that he/she doesn't know about. He might be intercepting your mail.

5. Make copies of all important papers. Store in a safe place.

6. Plan where you will go when you make your exit. Friends or family may not be the best choice as that is the first place he/she will look.

7. Pack a bag with important items that you would want to take if you had to leave in a hurry and put it in a safe place. Put some thought into this. If you have children, bring their favorite toy.

8. Make friends with a co-worker, if possible, someone that your husband or wife doesn’t know so that you have someplace to store your bag and also someplace to go that he/she doesn’t know anything about.

In the USA in an emergency call 911.
